The Rolex Submariner reference 6538 is a true icon—the most significant sports watch ever created. It stands as the ultimate embodiment of the diver's tool watch.

 

Often referred to as the "Big Crown" by watch enthusiasts, the Rolex Submariner 6538 holds a unique place in both Rolex and horological history, as it was the original James Bond Submariner, famously worn by Sean Connery in the early, genre-defining films. While other Submariner references—such as the 5508 and other small-crown models—have also been called the "Bond Sub," it is the 6538 that remains the definitive Bond Submariner!

 

These Big Crown Subs are magic on the wrist. Due to their rounded case back (similar to an earlier Bubble back Rolex reference), they sit higher on the wrist. Additionally, the space between the dial and the crystal gives the dial a unique depth, offering a view like no other Rolex.

 

This particular 6538 features a "two-line" dial, with only the "200m/660ft" and "Submariner" text in two colors, presented in a single (gilt) line. While four-line 6538s were chronometer certified, there were also some watches of the exact same reference that were not. On these non-certified models, the dial is simplified, lacking the chronometer certification at the six o'clock position. As a result, the watch features a slightly more open dial with a bit more breathing room, as per our watch!

 

Let’s delve a little deeper into this exceptional example, as we truly believe it might just be one of the finest and most extraordinary pieces still in existence. It goes without saying that this reference is exceptionally rare to find in such pristine, original condition. Its 38mm case remains in exceptional and super sharp condition, with its chamfers strong and vibrant. What sets it apart from other earlier references is the magical 8mm Brevet crown, which is simply magic on the wrist. The original red triangle bezel insert and brass bezel ring remain in outstanding condition, showing little to no damage or flaws.

But its real party piece, the star of the show, is its exceptionally rare and mesmerizing galvanic gilt tropical dial. For those who find themselves in the collector's world of these highly valuable big crowns, know that there aren’t too many perfect 6538s still around or in collections with a tropical dial in such condition and rich depth. It’s not much more than a handful, and this example truly blows you away. It’s outstanding. Once the sun hits the caramel, dark brown, and black tones, it’s like a sunrise on your wrist; the rich and vibrant hues are unmatched. Next to its unique discoloration, the dial itself remains in impeccable condition, with a full gloss gilt surface that has not lost any of its shine or glossy layer. The radium hands and markers have developed a charming and rich tone of caramel and brown, complementing the color variety of this unique tropical dial. The watch comes on the original 7206 riveted-link Oyster bracelet with 80 end links and a large logo clasp, which is a rare bird on its own.
