The Inside Story

Some things get better with time, like wines, whiskey, cheeses—and many watches that carry Tritium lume!

The 16550 was a transitional model produced between the reference 1655 and its successor, the 16570. Manufactured for about five years, from 1984 to 1989, it was the first Explorer II to feature an independently adjustable GMT hand, which could be set without stopping the movement.

We love these white-dialed 16550s, as they sometimes age with grace. Just look at the color of the lume—it gives these dials a warm, inviting depth. We also adore the "porcelain" type of dial, which Rolex produced for a brief period (the illustrious Daytona 16520 "porcelain" comes to mind). These dials had multiple layers of lacquer and varnish, giving the printed text a sense of depth, almost as if there’s a shadow beneath it—a truly cool effect.

The case and bezel are in nice condition, and the watch is fitted with a great Oyster bracelet, ref. 78360, with end links marked 501 and a clasp stamped K12. The watch has been fully serviced by our watchmaker.

Today, these are regarded as one of the quirkiest and most coveted neo-vintage Rolex models. Get in touch!
