The Tudor Pelagos Review
I guess it’s no secret, we love the modern Tudor Heritage watches. We have written about the chronographs and the Black Bay in blue. And just when we thought we had figured it all out, I discovered the Tudor Pelagos. I am sure it was maybe my limited attention when it comes to new watches or the fact that when it was introduced together with the Heritage Black Bay in 2012 the last one got all the show light. But when I was able to get one in my hand a while ago I knew immediately… this is a beast that I would love to shoot. And what a cool beast it is. Welcome to our Tudor Pelagos Review…
In my review on the latest Blue Black Bay I told you how much I love the vintage feel and emotion shown in that watch; the essence of that back to basic dive watch.
The Pelagos has that same basic feeling at first glance, but then it goes much deeper. The Pelagos just breathes tool watch DNA. As a Milsub and Comex collector I was always blown away by that special feeling of a watch dedicated to the most demanding work deep down on the bottom of the ocean or in most extreme missions. I have spoken to original Milsub owners about their adventures, and how these watches were used in missions. When you meet these guys and you hear their stories, you get an overwhelming sense of history, of heritage and of the individual character of each of these watches. This is why I love these watches and what they stand for.
The Modern Milsub
For me the Pelagos would be the perfect successor to these glorious watches. The Pelagos feels so strong and no-nonsense at first glance, but when you look deeper you see that the watch shows so much detail aesthetically. The titanium finish is just amazing and gives the watch such coolness and of course strength – symbolic and actual. Its matte finish also makes it totally understated and almost camouflaged.
Next to the technical, beautiful titanium bracelet the watch just looks amazing yet it also works beautifully on a single-pass strap. Tell me… how cool can it get? Don’t you feel toolwatch, mission, wild, deep down in the sea, rocks, mud, …
The Toolwatch for Modern Urban Survival
This watch also loves the leather single-pass straps and transfers seamlessly to urban living for the person who looks for a watch with an almost vintage aesthetic but a modern mechanism, to join them in their journey through life. This watch can be your partner in any situation or in any style.
See all those nice lines and details. Tudor makes the biggest effort to create the finest line of watches in their market. These watches combine amazing design with refined technical details. Tudor walk that extra mile as you can see in the beauty of their fine watches.
The classic shape of the case just screams toolwatch and the surface of the titanium is just so elegant and cool at the same time.
The bracelet shows some amazing details, like the self adjusting mechanism in the titanium clasp. It allows the bracelet to adjust during diving, contracting in deep water when the pressure compresses the diving suit. And it will expand when the pressure eases during ascent. Together with the gas escape valve, this is all you want for some serious diving. A friend and professional deep sea diver even stated… it’s the best diving watch in the world.
My favorite detail
My favorite detail is in the dial. The surface of the dial is just magical. The finish has just the right combination of matte and satin. I know it took them quite some effort to create this effect and it’s hard to capture, but the way in which the dial reflects just enough light to show all of its details and its snowflake style indexes with the angles and surfaces, is just magical. It just looks so 3-dimensional like that. Amazing.
Conclusion
There is one simple conclusion for me. The Tudor Pelagos is the coolest toolwatch of the moment. It’s the perfect successor to the famous professional watches like the Tudor MN, Milsub and Comex watches. With all the details and beauty of design it’s also one of the nicest watches out there for some cool Urban living and lifestyle.
I am curious as to what beauty Tudor will unveil in Basel 2015. The last few years have been just great. Every watch of the Heritage line is a watch I would be happy to wear…. And I am very picky on modern watches!
This watch looks great on the titanium bracelet, but we would not be B&S if we did not show you some different lookbook options, as it is so much fun to mix and match. This watch just keeps popping on all of them!
