The 1968 Omega Seamaster SM300

As a full blown Rolex collector over the last 9 years i have to say i neglected these beauiful watches in the past. The Omega Speedmaster was always a come and go for me. Just the last years i re-discovered those beauties. Wearing it on an leather single-pass became my favourite look. But i never owned a SM300 in the past. I had seen it at shows and dealers. But in my Rolex rush i never really looked deeper. Till recently.. when in an good sunday morning meet with collectors friends this SM300 came out of the box. And i was sold.

The perfect dial and patina, the condition of the dial and bezel and the combination with the MK1 bracelet was just wooaaa. And then came the story.
The collector picked up the watch from the family from the original owner who bought the watch new in 1968. As you see also from the date code on the bracelet. The guy died in 1972 and the wife kept all the belongings from that day in memory of her husband. So you see how the dial/bezel kept like this after 40 years.

And in a time where most of the watches you see out there are either fake or put together, you can see how happy i am to have found an original owner untouched watch.

This is the earlier Big Triangle version. Which is the more popular version among SM300 collectors. The combination of that dial, fat big case with the very elegant, cool MK1 bracelet gives the watch its cool looks. Also on the wrist. I always love that combination. Just also like an Rolex Submariner with the revited or folded bracelet. It lets the case shine and dial pop to your eyes.

A really cool detail is the cyclops at the date wheel. Its not like with Rolex watches on the outside of the plexi. But at the inside. Real cool!

The Omega SM 300 was used by also British Military forces in the 60th. By SBS, divers and other special forces also. With its sword hands and big indexes it had great visibility. Only as we understood they had a hard time to withstand the extreme use these special forces put them through and many of these issued watches suffered from water damage etc. That was why the British Military also demanded even stronger watches and so the Rolex Misub came into the picture in the 70th. Also fitted to MOD rules with sword hands, 60 minutes bezel and fixed bars.
The military issued Omega SM 300 by far does not fetch the prices of the Rolex counter parts. But still these days they are so rare and special that they get up to record prices. And finding a real and genuine one with provenance might be even more difficult then the Rolex brother.

The Omega Speedmaster 145.022 tropical dial from 1969

The Omega Speedmaster is just an perfect 1969 pre-moon example with an tropical dial and also the MK1 bracelet. The dial is almost copper and pure magic in the sun. I love tropical dials, that is no secret. And most of them are damaged, show spots or dirty indexes. But this one just was amazing.

But as i said.. i love to wear the Speedmaster on a leather single-pass strap. Especially this roughed calf leather one looks so great with that watch and because its so thin it is so comfortable. Toolwatch style…

Its just an amazing couple. See both the casebacks, dials and overal look of the case. So the same and just its own feel. One diver, one chrono. Great job from Omega in those days.

As said i love the MK1 bracelets. Makes the watch look cool. But of course these 2 Omega icons are just a perfect models to style them up with some handmade leather straps. They just look perfect with them Mix and match and strap up your life with these two classics.
